Walks

Around Casa Rosa there are excellent walks of all kinds, from a gentle stroll to a testing day′s hike. "Wild Walks" by Roger Jennings which can be found on www.bookshoppasatiempo.com are useful guides. The old Zafarraya railway track above Periana forms part of Wild Walk 3 "El Cañuelo". If you drive up to El Cañuelo and then walk up to the track, you can follow it all the way back down to Periana, enjoying incredible views along the way.

Caminito del Rey

El Caminito del Rey in El Chorro is an amazing experience for anyone with a good head for heights. Pinned along the steep walls of a stunningly beautiful narrow gorge, it recreates the original walk, once named as one of the scariest hikes in the world, in complete safety. We've done it so we know! Advance booking required (often a few months before as it does get booked up).

Other walks

IMG_5397.jpeg

A great favourite of ours is at a place we call "God′s Garden" or Tajo del Gomer. To reach this hidden gem you take the road out of Periana to the West in the direction of Mondron. Having passed Mondron, take the first right turning to Alfarnatejo. Take this road for a kilometre or two until you come to a small group of houses with a signpost marked Tajo del Gomer on a brown sign, and Boldanos and Dona Ana. This is a rough road and needs to be tackled with care. You cross an ugly concrete bridge and follow the road along the other side of a river bed until you see another small hamlet, where there is a goat farm on the left. Continue on the track between some houses and take the road to the left along the edge of the goat farm up a steep bit of road, park wherever you like and although this is now a wilderness some vehicles do pass this way.

For the more energetic, serious walkers there are a number of mountain routes with the biggest of them all - La Maroma (6774 feet, 2065 metres) - best tackled with a guide starting from the Area Recreativa near Alcaucin. A round trip walk of at least 8-10 hours for those so inclined.
