Verdugo, Periana (pictured)
The main Periana bar / restaurant is Verdugo in the centre of the village below the Ayuntamiento (Town Hall). It's full of local character (and characters!), friendly, unpretentious and inexpensive. The daily set lunch menu (menu del dia) is delicious home cooking at a remarkably cheap price (7 euros). Weekends and evenings are more expensive but also good. Summer terrace opposite is lovely.

Our favourite fish restaurant is a humble chiringuito on the sea shore – turn off main coastal motorway (direction Nerja) at Torrox, drive down towards the sea following signs to Torrox Costa, and at the third roundabout in central Torrox Costa, turn left along the coast. After about half a mile on the right, in a line of restaurants on the beach, you will see the entrance by the enormous blue cross camping sign and if you look down to the sea you will see cars parked under awnings. It is the best fried and grilled fish we have found – simple but delicious. Closed on Tuesday.

The best fried fish in Torre Del Mar. Having passed Velez-Malaga take the main road straight ahead at the roundabout under the motorway. Then at the next roundabout take the 1st turning to the right and follow this road into central Torre. At the next roundabout go all the way round and come out on the Avenue Andalucia. At the next roundabout head down towards the sea. Turn left along the seafront and the restaurant is there on the left near the next roundabout.
